Wow - the idea should surely be to gain those new users without ostracising a section of old users. Who by the way maybe some of the ones promoting the site to new players.
I have no idea how low the bar is but I do know it is too high for me.

Pretty sure this is double what it was last year. Maybe there's a graph somewhere. There's always other chess resources out there. I heard that chesstempo has recently launched a new android app so I checked it out. You should too - it's hilarious. But it will probably work on older devices....snigger.
v2 was only launched recently so hardly the reason why the number of users in the past year have increased.
20+ years ago there was a chess playing site called Caissa's Web - the site was wonderful and loved by all its members - for all the same reasons given here they changed their version - all the old users hated it but the enticement of new users was too strong. Where are they now? still going but incredibly small userbase. Not saying this will happen to Lichess but change is always a delicate balance between danger and opportunity.
I do hope the reasons for change were strong. I do not recall such passionate calls for change before v2 as there now seems to be in the reaction to this change.
@CrowChess No, I'm saying we've not lost a noticeable number of people. Life...finds a way.
v2 has some bugs for me (Firefox 66 user on Windows 10):
Board resizing doesn't work. The handle is shown, but I can't move it.
Also, in analysis mode, I can't see the opening book anymore. Here, too, the symbol is there, but clicking on it doesn't change anything.
@comeback_kid you can only resize the board before the game starts unless you change that option in your preferences.
i figgured it would be my laptop and firefox that is not strong enough for v2, but im also lagging on win 10 with 1700x 16g and nvme.
@Doofenshmirtz I did so, and I still can't. Like I wrote, the handle is shown.
